S.A. Slayer was one of Central Texas’ most celebrated underground metal bands until its final chapter in 1984. With recent news of reunion gigs booked at the 2025 Hell’s Heroes and Keep It True festivals, we caught up with guitarist Art Villarreal for an update and history lessons, including the highly collectible 1983 “Prepare to Die” EP, his time in Karion, the regional metal contingent, South Texas Legion, and why San Antonio was fertile ground for a faster, harder, more evil style of metal.
